The creation of a shape morphing composite
The goal of this project was to create a novel composite that can move (change its shape) using heat from electricity. It can then function as an automated hinge without using traditional actuators like motors.
After performing many tests I was able to create a composite that can be controlled using electricity (heat). Next, I did an extensive ideation on possible applications for this novel composite. Possible fields are medical products (braces, prosthesis) or making furniture go from 2D to 3D, which could save a lot of transportation costs.
This project was awarded with a 9 out of 10. It was featured at the exhibition Exceed!'17 (an exhibition featuring 25 of the most excelling and exemplary project of the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering in Delft) and was exhibited during the Dutch Design Week of 2017.
